Porthcawl wharf was severely damaged during the storm Barra.

After the storm on the evening of Tuesday, December 7, Porthcawl suffered "major damage" and the scaffolding fell to the sea.

The pier was recently closed to the public during maintenance. However, the storm has caused most of the scaffolding on the Porthcawl breakwater to collapse.

Porthcawl Pier is one of many areas in Wales affected by the storm Barra. The roof of Llanelli School was damaged by the storm and the Aberystwyth promenade was also hit hard.

Bridgend MP Jamie Wallis expressed his concerns about damage on social media. He wrote: "The storm Barra caused significant damage to the Port of Bossier.

He added: “I am deeply concerned about the threats to public safety around the terminal and RNLI’s ability to launch when needed.”

However, Porthcawl RNLI has confirmed: "The storm damage at this time will not cause us problems."

The Bridgend County Borough Council and Knights Brown are the contractors responsible for the ongoing maintenance work, and they guarantee that the problem will be resolved in a safe manner.

The City Council has confirmed that the breakwater itself was not damaged and no one was injured. However, the collapsed scaffolding must remain in place until the weather and tidal conditions improve.

City council officials are currently working closely with contractors Knights Brown and RLNI on site to assess the damage and ensure that the collapsed scaffolding pole does not cause any blockage or obstruction.

Community Cabinet Member Stewart Baldwin said: "While the rest of us are sleeping in bed, parliament workers go out in the worst storm to ensure people are safe, roads are clear, and damage is kept to a minimum.

"I want to thank all of them for their hard work. I also want to thank Knights Brown and RLNI for their quick and strong response to the collapse of the Porthcawl scaffolding.

"We will continue to work together to get everything back to normal as soon as possible.
