Plenty of new schemes starting this week in Plymouth

New roadworks schemes which will impact on some of Plymouth’s busiest roads start this week. Works will impact on the A38, William Prance Road, the Ridegway, Outland Road and Embankment Road.

On Thursday, there will be works affecting the A38. Between Marsh Mills to Leigham, on the slip road, between 9.30am and 3.30pm, there will be one lane closed opposite the Marsh Mills Retail Park. This is so South West Water can carry out sewer pipe cleaning.

From Wednesday, for the next ten days, there will also be new roadworks taking place on the already congested William Prance Road. There will be two-way signals, next to the Peninsula Radiology Academy, 24 hours a day. This is so Western Power Distribution can carry out new supply works.

There will also be a whole raft of road closures in and around the city and Plymouth Hoe on Saturday for Armed Forces day. Hoe Road will be closed from the junction with Citadel Road to the junction of Madeira Road, 7am to 11.30pm.

It comes as Plymouth City Council has said that they ‘do not have a magic wand’ to solve the traffic chaos seen daily in the city. Long delays, especially around the A386 Tavistock Road, have been a daily occurrence in recent months.

The council has apologised and admits that the situation is frustrating, but that there are reasons why some of the works have had to be carried out at the same time. And they said that while they are doing their best to mitigate for disruption, they do not have a magic wand and delays are unfortunately inevitable.

Plymouth City Council has helpfully put out a list of roadworks that will be taking place across the city over the next week. The council is responsible for coordinating works carried out by utility companies, developers and other organisations as well as their own repair, maintenance and improvement works.

They maintain all public roads in Plymouth except the A38, which is managed by Highways England on behalf of the Department for Transport.

“We know there's no good time to close roads, especially on busy routes and we do everything we can to co-ordinate planned works and minimise their impact on our transport network,” a City Council spokesman said.
