It can be said to be a miracle to complete the reconstruction of St. Joseph’s Cathedral in La Crosse before Christmas.
The $6 million project in downtown La Crosse was originally scheduled to be completed around Thanksgiving.
Bishop Richard Giles, the principal of the cathedral, said that the staff will be suspended in the winter. They hope to end in spring.
"They said that with the coming of winter...you know, they were just tired, they were tired, it was cold, and there was nothing they could do now," Giles told WIZM. "A lot of work will be postponed until spring."
Giles hopes that everything can be done in May or June.
The renovation project mainly focused on replacing the stone on the outer wall of the cathedral, but there were also internal improvements. Next May is the 60th anniversary of the completion of this building.
The bishop said labor shortages and delays in supply lengthened the project, which began in February.
Giles added that some scaffolding around the church may be removed soon.
Giles said: "Their goal is to lower the scaffolding to below the height of the clock tower facing north."
For now, people going to the church must continue to use the entrance outside the parking lot on the west side of the cathedral, not the main street or 6th street gate.
