Comments by author and TV presenter Richard Osman in praise of London estate agency Brixanne Mortar have gone viral after he spotted the firm’s name during a recent episode of Under the Hammer.

The firm, which covers many parts of south London including Catford and Brixton, caught Osman’s eye for its unusual play on the phrase ‘bricks and mortar’ although the sole director of the company is Daniel Mfon, who established the agency in 2011.

Osman, who created the popular TV game show Pointless and whose two recent crime novels have become global best sellers, took a shine to Mfon’s firm, tweeting that “they’ve just had an estate agency on #HomesUnderTheHammer called ‘Brixanne Morter’.

Thousands of his Twitter followers have liked the comment, with several pitching in with their own local estate agencies featuring cheeky names.

These included Grant Bevan who proffered up Kidderminster estate agency Doolittle & Dalley while another pointed out SW London firm Seymour Green and John Hood nominated Cardiff estate agency Crook & Blight.

Other property-related companies with amusing names highlighted by Osman’s fanbase included scaffolding company Tubular Bells and conveyancing firm Argue & Phibbs.

But not mentioned in the Twitter comments is the 2005 reports of a retirement development in Purley, south London which was initially called West Purley Gates, a block of 13 apartments overlooking the A23.

The way its developer wrote the sign meant ‘Purley Gates’ was picked out and, after local and then national media picked up on the blooper, the consortium of private investors behind the edifice later changed it to something less heavenly.
