'OSHA?:' Workers Balance on Scaffolding Without Harnesses in Dizzying Video

Shocking footage that appears to show construction workers walking on a scaffold without proper harness protection has gone viral.

The video was posted in Reddit's "That's Insane" forum over the weekend by u/tefunka, who wrote: "OSHA? What's that?" The post has garnered more than 13,000 upvotes and over 900 comments from angry Redditors who slammed the workers for the safety hazard.

In the clip, the workers are balanced on a scaffold several stories high as they work. Despite how dangerous this is, there aren't any guardrails in sight. And while some of the workers appear to be wearing harnesses, they don't seem to be attached to anything, rendering them useless in an emergency situation.

The person recording pans the camera down to show just how high they are, but this doesn't seem to bother the workers, who smile at the camera as they go about their business.

"This makes me nauseous," wrote u/Kir_NB.

In response, u/EveryOptionSucks added: "That look down made my gut clench. No f**king bueno."

On its website, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) explained that falls are the most common cause of death for construction workers, accounting for more than 33 percent of all construction deaths. To prevent such tragedies, OSHA requires employers to provide "fall protection" for workers "exposed to vertical drops of six feet or more."

Fall protection may include installing guardrails around hazard areas, deploying safety nets or providing a "personal fall arrest system" for each individual employee.

"There are three major components of a Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS)," OSHA said. Those components are the anchor, a connecting device and a full-body harness.

"Your anchorage point must be capable of supporting 5,000 pounds per attached worker," OSHA explained, adding that connectors must be made of synthetic material.

As previously mentioned, the workers in u/tefunka's video don't appear to be anchored to anything, a detail that has angered online commenters.

"There's a reason codes exist, they're written in blood," wrote That_FireAlarm_Guy. "These guys are gonna be prime examples if they keep this up."

This is so disrespectful to the people that love them," commented u/tramad2652.

"It's so easy to install lifelines rigged from above so you can be tied off the entire time, though this is just insanely stupid. All the balance in the world can't stop you from being pushed by the wind," added u/Holiday-Wrongdoer-46.

"Are they proud of not using any protection?" asked u/Snake9r.
