The savvy parents shared the clever tricks he used to minimize costs

A father with two children used the Argos and eBay deal to save himself £350 to transform a monotonous and messy room into a walk-in closet.

Kenroy Malcolm, a 33-year-old teaching assistant who runs a DIY video blog channel on Youtube, explained his ways to save money to LatestDeals.co.uk.

After being quoted by professionals for £470, he chose to make the renovation himself and managed to complete the walk-in closet at a price of £120.

Kenroy told the money-saving community: “We have a small area between the two bedrooms, and we want to use it for storage, but we are not sure how to make the most of the area.

"The original idea was to knock down one of the walls and make it a walk-in closet, but I don't plan to do this now, so I'm looking for plan B.

"Then I stumbled upon a sliding door on Argos, which saves us space compared to traditional doors.

"I know this is the best option because we can avoid opening and closing a door, and simply slide a door over to enter the space.

"I want to do it myself, rather than spend money to ask someone to come in and help me do it. A friend in the industry estimates that a joiner will charge about £170 a day for labor.

"Since this project may take a whole day, if the materials are purchased, the cost is about 300 pounds, which means I will pay about 470 pounds."

Kenroy said he is confident that he can complete the job and save money.

"Saving money for a better life for my family was my main inspiration for this project.

"Installing sliding doors is usually an expensive task, and I am determined to show others that there is another option for this expensive route."

He also reused materials from previous projects to reduce the cost of "naked wardrobe" sliding doors.

He added: “I also want to use some of the scaffolding boards I got in previous projects. There are still some of these scaffolding boards. Make some shelves above the wardrobe and stack things.”

"On the supply side, I bought a folding door from Argos for £32.

"For people on a tight budget, there is a cheaper version at £22, but I decided to spend more money on this.

"I bought some shelves from eBay, four for 22 pounds, and then I bought naked clothes from Wayfair for 55 pounds-technically called metal frame hangers. The price seems to have risen since then, so I got lucky of!

"I got free recycled wood to make the door frame. This particular piece of wood left a deep impression on me because I was actually rescued from a neighbor.

"He is doing some renovations on his attic. He is throwing away these old wood. I think they are part of the rafters in his attic.

"Instead of throwing it away, I want to use this solid wood in my project.

"I also bought some wood from a local hardware store for no more than £10.

"I also saved some purchase costs by using a website called Top Cashback.

"I always aim to save as much money as possible because my goal is to save enough money to buy my first investment property.

"This website is great for saving money in cashback. Between February and May this year, I received more than £100 in cashback."

Kenroy explained how he installed sliding doors by cleaning up cluttered spaces and organizing the items he wanted to keep, and sold a bookshelf for £15.

"I first measured the size of the door, then measured the wood covering the gap between the door and the wall, and then trimmed it to the right size.

"Next, I took the staples from the salvaged wood picked up by my neighbors and cut them to the size I wanted.

"The wood is in a rather rough condition, but I sanded it. Once the sanding is finished, I don't need varnish or paint.

"More importantly, the rustic appearance of the wood is consistent with our style throughout the property, so it is a perfect match.

"Once I set up the support above the door, I picked up the real sliding door. Thankfully, the setup is very simple.

"Next I set up a naked wardrobe. The overall quality is good value for money, and the assembly is very simple.

"The last step is to install the shelves, which I made with scaffolding boards earlier this year.

"I drilled holes in the bracket, and then installed the shelf with the help of my brother.

"In general, I am very satisfied with this project. I was very busy at the time, so it took me a few days to complete, but I think if I set aside a whole day, I can complete all within that time frame. Work and dust it.

"I am very happy to come up with a cost-effective solution to make the most of this small space in the house."
